Backyard lawn - seed selection, sowing, maintenance

The renovation of your new home is nearing completion, so it's time for the garden. Regardless of whether you plan to plant trees, shrubs, or flowers, an important element is the lawn.

Are you considering the type of grass and seeds you need, as well as the quantity?

Read our article, and you'll certainly gain some clarity.

Choose the appropriate type of grass

If you plan to have an active leisure time in your backyard garden, your lawn should be resistant to trampling and heavy use, while also requiring minimal maintenance and infrequent mowing (unless you enjoy gardening tasks).
As a resident in Zielono Mi estate in suburban Podolszyn near Warsaw or Zielone Ogrody on the outskirts of Łódź, besides decorative aspects, you should also consider the practicality of your lawn.
A professional turf akin to a soccer stadium or an ornamental lawn creating a perfect and plush, yet delicate carpet, may not be sufficient.
Universal blends available in the market, which are fairly durable and low-growing, adapt well even in lightly shaded gardens.
Such blends often include red fescue (Festuca rubra) or meadow grass (Poa pratensis).

With such a lawn, playtime with children or hosting grill parties with friends will be a pleasure without worrying about damage.

Purchase the appropriate quantity of seeds

Regardless of whether you own a modest thirty-square-meter backyard or a large, over one-hundred-square-meter garden, when sowing a lawn, you should remember about the appropriate density.
Typically, for universal, household lawn blends, it is recommended to use around 30-40g of grass seeds per square meter.
This means that for a 30 square meter garden, you will need approximately 900-1200g of grass seeds.
However, it is advisable to purchase a bit more seeds in case there are empty spaces to fill during growth or if birds in the area pick at some.
Therefore, for example, as a resident of Pod Topolami estate and owner of an 84 square meter garden, wanting to cover the entire area with lawn, purchase about 3.5 kg of seeds.

The process of sowing grass

Prepare the surface where you will sow the grass by leveling the soil and removing stones and weeds.

The ideal time for sowing grass is spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate, and the soil is warm and naturally moist. If it hasn't rained for a while, water the soil a few days before sowing.
Then, spread the seeds evenly over the entire lawn area, using the appropriate amount per square meter according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
After sowing, gently press the seeds into the soil using a garden roller or wooden board.
It's also advisable to cover them with a thin layer of fertile soil, preferably 0.5 - 1 cm thick.
This will prevent the seeds from washing away after rain or being picked at by birds.
Over the next few days, regularly water the surface, avoiding excessive watering to prevent seed washout.
The water stream should be gentle and dispersed.
During the grass's growth phase, avoid walking on it.

After the grass has germinated and established itself (approximately 4 weeks after sowing), perform the first mowing, maintaining the cutting height according to the recommendations for the specific grass species.
