How to Optically Enlarge a Room - Useful Tricks

Nowadays, most of us, especially in cities and suburban areas, live in small houses or apartments. It's worth knowing how to paint and furnish a room to optically add space and make the occupants feel comfortable without losing the coziness of the room. Read our article and discover useful tricks.

Step 1 - Windows

The larger the windows, the larger the room appears.
Novisa builds houses and apartments with large, often panoramic windows that can work wonders in terms of the sense of space.
However, it's not always possible to influence the appearance of windows, especially when buying older apartments on the secondary market.
In such cases, try to expose the windows as much as possible to let in as much natural light as possible.
It's worth forgoing thick curtains and drapes.
Instead, it's better to use Roman blinds, day-night blinds, or classic fabric or Venetian blinds.
This way, the glass can be covered if necessary, and the exposed window recess and space under the windowsill will optically enlarge the room.

Step 2 - Floor

A uniform floor throughout the entire apartment will add a sense of space.
It's worth, as much as possible, opting for panels, wood, or tiles throughout the home, especially in rooms without doors or where the doors usually remain open.
This way, the eye wandering through the rooms won't be stopped by intersections and changes in floor texture.

Step 3 - Painting

Primarily use light colors; do not paint a small room with dark paints if you want to avoid a cramped effect. However, do you want bottle green, burgundy, or navy blue?
Choose one smaller wall or niche, preferably opposite the window, so that sunlight illuminates it for most of the day, and apply your favorite darker color there.
It's important for the ceiling to be lighter than the walls, preferably white, and move the boundary of the two paints a few centimeters below the true edge of the ceiling and walls.
This way, the room will appear higher than it actually is.
You can use the same trick on an accent wall, creating a kind of screen with a light frame in the color of the remaining walls.

Don't be afraid to use patterns, but remember the rule of highlighting one wall.
You can use wallpaper with a small pattern, a pattern creating an illusion of depth, or even longitudinal or transverse stripes.

Step 4 - Furniture

Heavy furniture can overwhelm small spaces.
Low and deep dressers, large tables with thick, several centimeter tops, and ornate legs look beautiful and noble, but they are not allies of small rooms.
Here, tall, simple furniture with maximum functionality will work better.
It's worth avoiding open shelves with a large number of shelves because displayed trinkets on top can easily create chaos and a sense of overcrowding.

Step 5 - Lighting and Decorations

In smaller rooms, and those with a standard height of about 250 cm, avoid large, low-hanging chandeliers as they will visually lower the ceiling even more.
Instead, opt for short chandeliers or flat ceiling lamps, as well as spot lighting, such as standing lamps in the bedroom area, by the desk, or in darker corners.
A lot of diffused light will add lightness to the room.

You don't have to give up decorations or plants in smaller spaces, just be mindful not to overdo it with the number of styles and colors.
Focus on one or two color accents in the room and avoid clutter.

Mirrors, glossy surfaces of furniture, and glass inserts will be your allies.
Mirrors enlarge the space, so don't hesitate to use them on wardrobe doors or even on an entire smaller wall.
Pay attention to what reflects in the mirror, as hanging it opposite a cluttered space will visually double the clutter.

To enlarge the room, you don't have to create a sterile, white apartment.
Apply the above principles to any extent, in line with your own taste, style, and beliefs.
Create the perfect, cozy nest for yourself and your loved ones.
