Kitchenette or separate kitchen?

Kitchenette or separate kitchen?

The kitchen holds a significant place in our culture, making the question "Separate kitchen or kitchenette?" one of the most important ones we ponder when searching for a home or starting construction. While kitchenettes have surged in popularity in recent decades, independent kitchens still have many advocates. Therefore, if you're currently grappling with this decision, read our article and choose wisely.

Kitchenette

In the United States, the trend of open spaces began in the 1950s and 60s, but in Poland, this trend arrived only in the 1990s and the early 21st century.
The shift involved moving away from small kitchens, often without windows, and merging the space for cooking, dining, and family relaxation into one large room.
It became the place where the whole family spends the most time, and preparing and serving meals is much easier and doesn't involve isolation from fellow diners.

The primary advantages of a kitchenette include:

Optical enlargement of space, illumination of the kitchen with natural light, easier serving of dishes to the table, sense of community with family members.

However, despite being prevalent in most modern homes, kitchenettes also have drawbacks.
Opponents primarily mention the permeation of kitchen odors throughout the house, limited storage space due to the lack of additional walls, and a sense of clutter caused by visible kitchen utensils.

Separate kitchen

A separate kitchen is most commonly associated with large houses and apartments in post-war blocks.
In ample space, where the kitchen has a window and room for an extensive table for the whole family, such a kitchen is a great asset.
The mess among dishes, spices, or kitchen appliances, which seems to appear out of nowhere, remains hidden from guests.
Odors or steam from cooked dishes stay in place. In such a kitchen, there is also more space on the walls for hanging cabinets, shelves, or utensil racks.
In a closed kitchen, you can afford to display cups or spice boxes, whereas in a kitchenette, which is, in fact, in the living room, it's worth hiding these things.

Unfortunately, a closed kitchen isolates those in it from family members or guests.
While preparing meals, there's no opportunity to watch TV shows in the living room or engage in casual conversation with guests sitting at the table.
Usually, the person cooking or replenishing snacks is alone in the kitchen.
