In the industrial Łódź of the 19th century, four nations - Poles, Germans, Jews, and Russians - jointly created the city's industrial landscape. Germans and Jews engaged in crafts and established factories, where Poles, arriving in Łódź as the "promised land" from small towns and villages, worked. All of this took place within the territory of the Russian partition. Cultures and languages intermingled, leaving traces that remain to this day, including in the cuisine and language of Łódź. The memory of multicultural Łódź is particularly preserved during the annual Festival of the Four Cultures of Łódź.
