Is a separate dressing room a novelty for you? Wondering how to best organize those few/teen square meters to fit all your clothes and accessories, while maintaining order and functionality? Or perhaps you're planning to arrange a mini wardrobe in your bedroom and need practical tips? Read our article and learn how to properly store clothes in the wardrobe.
Clothing segregation
Clothing segregation is an activity that requires some patience, which is why we tend to postpone it.
However, it's worth dedicating a day to it, especially before moving (See, where to start the moving process) or planning wardrobe arrangement.
During this process, you may find that many clothes or accessories you no longer wear, are damaged, or in the wrong size, cluttering your closet and taking up valuable space.
Clothes that you no longer like or that are the wrong size can be listed for auction on one of the many popular platforms (e.g., Vinted or OLX).
This may not provide you with financial gain, but it will be a significant step towards protecting our planet from pollution.
Alternatively, you can donate unwanted clothes to special containers, from where they will embark on a journey to serve new owners.
Seasonal clothing
Regular segregation of seasonal clothing is a very good habit.
This way, winter jackets, hats, or boots won't distract you when searching for a summer dress.
During winter, it's advisable to store short tops, shorts, or sandals in containers or bags and place them on the highest shelf or in the deeper part of the closet.
Remember to ensure that the clothes are perfectly dry and clean to avoid the growth of bacteria or unpleasant odors over those few months.
The same applies to shoes - before storing them in boxes and placing them at the bottom of the closet, thoroughly clean the soles and place scented sachets or fresh coffee beans inside to maintain a pleasant scent.
On a hanger or on a shelf?
Although storing clothes on hangers is much easier, both in maintaining their shape after ironing and in categorization, not all types of clothing like it.
Avoid hanging clothes made of fabric (i.e., those that stretch in every direction), such as sweaters, as they can easily stretch and distort.
These clothes should definitely be placed on shelves.
Hang dresses, shirts (button them up to prevent them from shifting and falling off), jackets, and even pants and skirts on hangers (there are special hangers with clips).
Remember to hang clothes relatively loosely so that they are not tightly squeezed, making them easily accessible and preventing them from wrinkling.
Shoes, handbags, belts
Leather products (both genuine and synthetic) don't like distortion.
Remember not to squeeze them, as over time the leather in that area may crack or develop permanent unsightly creases.
Roll belts so they don't have folds or hang them vertically on hooks, store jackets flat or vertically on hangers, fill shoe uppers with special forms, or even paper or foil to maintain their shape.
The same applies to handbags - don't lay them flat on a shelf, one on top of the other, as this can cause the edges of the flaps to crack.
Handbags are best stored vertically, filled similarly to shoes, and they will serve you much longer this way.
Drawers
You can never have too many drawers.
When planning storage systems or a wardrobe for the bedroom, remember about drawers.
You can store underwear, rolled belts, and other accessories in them, and in the taller ones, even handbags or shoes.
Thoughtfully designed organizers will help you separate accessories, making them easy and enjoyable to use.
What else is worth remembering?
Wardrobes rarely have windows, so remember about proper lighting, preferably strong and natural, which will facilitate using it at any time of the day.
Additionally, it's worth installing a moisture absorber and a gentle air freshener (e.g., one with sticks) and regularly airing out the wardrobe.
If it's a separate room with doors, leave them open often to maintain healthy air circulation for the clothes.
