Imagine a spring morning – the sun gently caresses your face, and the garden greets you with greenery, the scent of freshness, and the first flower buds. Doesn’t that sound like a dream come true? But to enjoy such harmony in spring, you need to take care of your garden now, in autumn. Sound like a challenge? Don’t worry! You don’t need to be a gardening expert – just a bit of willingness and a few simple steps are enough to make your garden breathtaking every day come spring.
Leaves – rake them or leave them?
In autumn, your lawn transforms into a colorful carpet of leaves. It looks magical, but it’s also a signal to take action. Why? Fallen leaves, if left on the lawn for too long, can block light and oxygen from reaching the soil, weakening the grass. But don’t worry, you don’t have to rake every single leaf! Just clear the ones lying on the lawn and use the rest in a clever way.
Leaves work great as natural mulch. Spread them under shrubs or fruit trees – they’ll form a protective layer against the winter chill. Roses and other ornamental plants will also appreciate this "natural blanket." If you have a vegetable garden, leaves can go there too – they’ll improve soil structure and reduce weed growth. A layer about 5 cm thick will do just fine.
Prepare the soil for its winter rest
The soil in your garden is the foundation of beautiful plants. Autumn is the perfect time to prepare it properly. After gathering the leaves, it’s worth digging the soil to a depth of several centimeters. This will improve its aeration and help it endure winter frosts better.
Now is also the time to enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilizer. This boost of nutrients will prepare the soil for planting new plants in spring. Imagine how easily you’ll plant your favorite flowers or vegetables in March, with everything already properly prepared.
Take care of your plants
Your roses, lavender, or young fruit trees need your care now. Autumn is the time to ensure their comfort during the winter months. Prune dried branches and protect the plants from frost. Spread a layer of leaves around their bases, and wrap more delicate specimens with agrotextile. It’s like a warm coat for your plants, shielding them from frost.
Well-prepared plants will reward you in spring with lush growth and beautiful blooming. And you’ll proudly watch as your garden comes back to life.
The lawn needs attention too
Your lawn is the heart of the garden, and autumn is the last moment to take care of it. Mowing the grass to a height of about 4-5 cm before winter will help protect it from frost. If the lawn is compacted, aerate it – a garden fork or a special aeration tool will do the trick. This will allow water and air to reach the roots deeply, helping the grass survive the winter in great condition.
Imagine that in spring, you won’t have to start by rescuing your lawn, but can immediately enjoy its lush green color. It’s worth spending a moment now to have less work later.
And what about the tools?
After an intense season, it’s also worth taking care of your tools. Clean them thoroughly, remove any dirt and plant residues, and then dry them. Sharpen scissors, pruners, and spades – in spring, they’ll be ready for use, and you’ll avoid the frustration of things not working as they should. Store your tools in a dry, cool place to prevent rust. These are small details, but they will make your gardening work much more enjoyable.

Autumn cleaning is an investment in your future peace and joy. The garden is a place where you relax, spend time with loved ones, and draw energy from nature. Taking care of it now will allow you to enjoy its beauty in spring without unnecessary stress.
