Winter holidays are just around the corner (in several provinces they are already underway), and you're lacking ideas on how to diversify them for your children, so they don't spend this time in front of the TV or computer? Read our article and find inspiration on how to creatively spend evenings at home with your children.
Home Cinema
Movie screenings are a time when you, as a parent, can also relax. Prepare the repertoire in advance and encourage your children to draw movie posters, which you can hang on the wall or doors during the screening, and to make tickets (containing the date of the screening, name of the seating area, and a part to tear off upon entering). The preparation of the screening itself will be a creative play for the children.
In the meantime, you spread blankets and pillows on the couch or floor. The houses we build have large living rooms, which can successfully transform into a cinema room for the evening. Ensure soft lighting to create a special atmosphere. Films are more enjoyable to watch in a dark room, but it shouldn't be too dark so that participants can easily find snacks! If you don't have a lamp with adjustable brightness at home, a good solution for the time being would be to use Christmas lights.
Snacks are very important at every screening, so don't forget about popcorn, nachos with sauce, or chips. A healthier version might include sliced fruit with a topping (e.g., maple syrup). Prepare film sets for each participant and distribute them during the "ticket check" before the screening. Make winter tea with lemon and honey in advance and pour it into paper cups with lids and straws to more closely replicate the cinema experience.
Kitchen Experiments
Kitchen experiments are great fun for children and at the same time a way to learn basic culinary skills. Make caramel pine cones. Buy puffed rice, soft toffees (caramels), and butter. Melt a small amount of butter and toffees in a pot and slowly add rice while stirring. Let the children measure spoons of rice and throw it into the pot. When the mixture is still warm and pliable but not hot, shape it into balls and leave to cool.
Prepare colorful popcorn for the movie screening. Buy natural popcorn without additives (can also be the microwaveable kind) and food coloring as well as popcorn additives (e.g., peanut butter, coconut milk, honey, cinnamon, or spices like salt, curry, or Herbes de Provence). Pour some oil into a pot, just enough to cover the bottom, and add your chosen additives or coloring. Heat the contents of the pot, throw in the corn, and cover tightly. The popcorn will absorb the aroma, taste, and color as it cooks. Children will surely be delighted eating green coconut-flavored popcorn!
Board Game Day
If you don't have favorite board games or if you're bored with the ones you have, create your own or play other games. Try popular "forehead" games with your children, like charades, which develop imagination and creativity and provide lots of laughter and entertainment! It's worth using a phone for this, as there are many apps available with phrases in different categories. Create a knowledge quiz or play the popular game "countries and cities". On pieces of paper, write down categories (e.g., name, food, plant, city, etc.) - each participant should get the same card and try to write down terms for a previously determined letter. Whoever completes their card first stops the time, then everyone reads their terms aloud. If two or more people have the same term, they get 5 points, if a participant comes up with an original term that no one else has, they get 10 points, and if in the entire group only one person manages to come up with a term for a given letter, they get 15 points. Then draw another letter. The game continues until the letters in the alphabet are exhausted or participants wish to stop. In the end, count all the points. Naturally, the person who came up with the most original terms and scored the most points wins.
