  • Manufactory in Marki

    At the end of the 19th century, a spinning manufactory was established in Marki — one of the largest and most modern in Europe at that time. During its peak, the factory employed 1100 people. The founders of the manufactory included two English industrialists — Edward and John Briggs, who soon after arriving in Marki, settled in a residence specially built for this purpose, located on the edge of a picturesque park. The English-style palace and park have been preserved to this day and constitute a tourist attraction of the city (the park features, among others, over hundred-year-old oaks, which are natural monuments, as well as equally old poplars and maples). The Briggs brothers built, among other things, a workers’ estate, an elementary school, and supported the construction of St. Isidore’s Church in Marki. It was thanks to the manufactory and the business acumen of Edward and John Briggs that the small town became a thriving industrial center.
