Garden design ideas – zones, furniture, ready-made solutions

20 March 2026

As a developer who has been building housing estates with gardens for years, we know how valuable green spaces next to your home are. Even a small garden offers something an apartment in a block of flats never will. It’s a place to hang laundry in the summer and a space where your child can safely play in a sandbox while you keep an eye on them at all times. It’s our piece of grass, open sky, and peace that we can enjoy every day—not just during weekend trips to a summer house.

Gardens in our suburban developments come in various sizes—from a few dozen to several hundred square meters. For those with bigger plans, a garden becomes a place for celebrations and growing your own plants. Living in a house with a garden, you enjoy all its benefits every day—it’s definitely a higher standard of living. What is a holiday dream for others can become your everyday reality. In this article, we’ll share garden design ideas divided into functional zones.

Relaxation zone in the garden

Even if you love the sun, it’s worth creating a shaded area in your garden. A corner where you can read a book, enjoy weekend coffee, and where sunlight won’t glare on your phone or laptop screen.

Depending on the size of your garden, you can choose different solutions: a pergola, gazebo, freestanding umbrella, or even a simple canopy over a swing. If you’re planning a small cocoon-style swing or a double swing, choose a version with a canopy or place it in a small gazebo to stay protected from the sun.

In larger gardens, you can create a full chill-out zone—a lounge set under a pergola with a modular sofa, sun loungers, and a table where you can have breakfast.

Wooden furniture looks beautiful, but in practice, more durable and moisture-resistant options are plastic furniture imitating rattan or wicker.

To create a sense of privacy, plant a hedge (such as privet or hornbeam) or use panels with climbing plants (ivy, honeysuckle, hydrangea). Keep in mind that climbers and vines grow quickly and require regular maintenance. We advise avoiding thuja or yew—they acidify the soil, deplete it, and are toxic to other organisms.

In large gardens, the relaxation area can be truly extensive. On a large terrace, you can place a hammock on a metal frame, a swing, or even a portable hot tub or wooden sauna. The key is to plan comfortable pathways so that using the sauna or tub ensures privacy for both you and your neighbors. Separate the space with panels or hedges so everyone can fully enjoy the relaxation zone.

Garden party area

A weekend, no obligations, and breakfast outdoors with the whole family. The aroma of coffee, fresh bread, and homemade pastries—perfect. But remember—the sun will quickly melt butter, cheese, or chocolate toppings, so it’s best to place the table in the shade.

In smaller gardens, combine the relaxation and dining areas. If you have space for a table near a cocoon swing, it can serve as seating during breakfast. Every piece of furniture should be versatile—comfortable for both relaxing and eating. It’s also worth considering a small side table or shelf for extra plates, cups, or ingredients—not everything will fit on a small table at once.

When choosing a grill, we recommend our guide: Types of grills – which one to choose?

In medium and large gardens, there are more possibilities. You can create a separate dining area with a higher table and comfortable chairs—great for meals, though not necessarily for relaxing with a book. With more space, you can add a built-in grill, access to running water (e.g., from a barrel), and a cabinet for grilling accessories.

Remember, the key is always a well-positioned table, protection from the sun, and good organization—then your garden will become your favorite outdoor dining space.

Growing vegetables and herbs

Even in a small garden, you can grow your own vegetables and herbs. A few boxes with radishes, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, or strawberries are enough to enjoy fresh, nutritious additions to your meals. You don’t need much space to bring seasonal products from your own garden into your home.

In small gardens, vertical gardens work perfectly—tiered beds or ready-made vertical planters. You can grow herbs like basil, thyme, oregano, or mint. Additionally, near the entrance, it’s worth planting plants that repel pests, such as lavender, sage, or mint. They not only smell great but also serve a practical function—protecting your home from insects.

In medium gardens, you can expand your cultivation. Sow commonly used vegetables like carrots, celery, leeks, or beets. You can combine them in beds, following companion planting rules—some plants grow well together, others should not share the same soil (more in our article: Where to start garden work after winter?).

In large gardens, the possibilities are endless—a rock garden, natural fountain, flower beds, or a mini orchard with fruit trees and shrubs like currants, gooseberries, or raspberries. Such a garden will look beautiful, but plan the layout carefully—ensure proper sun exposure and avoid disrupting pathways. A flower bed in the middle may look impressive but can make playing on the lawn difficult. If you choose fruit trees and shrubs, remember that wasps may appear, and unharvested fruit will rot. Think about how much fruit you can actually use so your garden remains both beautiful and practical. Grapevines can become part of a decorative wall or gazebo.

Children’s zone in the garden

When you have your own garden, your child isn’t dependent on your schedule or whether you have time to take them to a playground. A private garden allows you to create a space where a child can play independently, while still being under your supervision—even when you’re cooking or cleaning.

In small gardens, a sandbox, small slide, and a few outdoor toys work great. Everything arranged so the child can use the space freely while parents can comfortably supervise from the terrace or living room.

In medium gardens, you can fit an inflatable pool, a playhouse, or climbing frames that develop coordination and physical fitness. The child feels the garden belongs to them—running, climbing, and exploring naturally.

In large gardens, possibilities are nearly unlimited—trampoline, large pool with a slide, swings, and areas for group games. The garden becomes a hub for fun and social gatherings during summer.

The garden also allows for creative, “messy” play that would be difficult indoors. Painting or playing with clay—all without worrying about dirty floors or walls.

Your garden can become both a relaxation space for adults and a vibrant, creative, and safe world for children.

Benefits of a garden for pets

Your own garden is also a true haven for pets. Even a small space allows them to stay active and enjoy nature—something hard to achieve in an apartment.

On hot days, your dog will appreciate a small pool with cool water. The garden is also a perfect place for grooming—bathing, brushing, or trimming nails. You can do it outdoors without worrying about flooding the bathroom or making a mess inside.

For cats, the garden is a playground—trees and shrubs serve as natural scratching posts and climbing spots. You can also create sandy areas or shaded hideouts, allowing your cat to safely explore and follow its instincts.

Practical uses of the garden

Beyond relaxation and fun, a major advantage of having your own garden is its practicality. It’s a space that simplifies daily life and offers possibilities unavailable in an apartment. You have a place to hang laundry, air bedding, or wash a rug.

The garden is also perfect for repotting plants, refurbishing furniture, or doing creative DIY projects that might dirty your interior. You can create a mini workshop, service your bike, or groom your pet. The garden is your piece of home with superpowers—a place where you relax, play with children, grow plants, pursue hobbies, and care for your pets.

Summary

Having your own garden, even a small one, means a higher quality of life. Every square meter can serve multiple purposes—relaxation, dining, children’s play, plant cultivation, and practical tasks. A small patch of grass and outdoor space provides a sense of freedom and peace that’s hard to achieve in an apartment.

A house with a garden is always a good choice.
