Air-Purifying Plants for Your Apartment – Which Ones to Choose?

15 March 2024

Did you know that plants not only absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, but some of them also have another superpower? They purify the air from toxins!

Your humble fern or trailing ivy hanging from the ceiling are constantly doing important work that you might not have been aware of!

Whether you’re just furnishing your apartment or planning to expand your plant family, check out which plants are worth investing in.

Does your flower really have something to cleanse?

Surely you’re wondering where the toxins in your apartment come from and if you really need purifying plants.
Especially if you live outside the city, in a house with a garden, and your neighbors are meadows or forests, rather than a busy street in a big city.
Of course, the level of toxins entering your home is much lower in such cases, but some compounds cannot be completely eliminated.

Formaldehyde – is a chemical compound commonly used in the production of adhesives, binders, and paints.
Therefore, many new products, furniture (especially made of particle board), carpets, electronics, and even books and magazines emit this substance.

Benzene – currently, products we come into contact with in our homes, such as paints or cleaning agents, generally do not contain benzene.
However, certain amounts of it can still be found in tobacco smoke or car exhaust fumes.

Toluene – apart from exhaust fumes, small amounts of it can be found in nail polish removers, cleaning agents, or stain removers, in addition to some paints or solvents.

The mentioned chemical compounds are toxic, but there is currently increasing emphasis on safe production and reducing or minimizing the use of these chemicals by factories.

However, it is worth being aware of their existence and, if possible, purifying the air in your apartment.

Choose useful plants

Aloe vera has the remarkable ability to absorb toxic substances from the air.
Additionally, it helps maintain proper humidity levels in rooms, which further enhances the health and well-being of residents.

Spider plants, golden pothos, and ivy, besides their ability to absorb harmful chemicals, are exceptionally easy to care for, making them ideal for beginners or those with little time to dedicate to plant care.
The latter two grow particularly fast and enjoy occupying any available space, making them suitable for installations such as hanging from ceilings or along walls.

Ferns are one of the few potted plants that thrive in bathrooms.
They prefer moderate levels of indirect light and high humidity.
They can help purify the air from chemicals released during the use of cleaning products.

The bamboo palm and ficus are plants that can also help purify your indoor air, but their cultivation requires attention to specific conditions.
Both plants dislike direct sunlight, as it can scorch their leaves.
The soil for bamboo palm should be moist but not too wet, requiring regular watering to avoid soil dryness.
On the other hand, ficus prefers to grow in slightly dry soil, with overwatering leading to root rot.
It appreciates having its leaves lightly misted with water, such as using a sprayer.

Now you know that even if you live in a Novisa Development home in a fantastic location surrounded by nature and greenery, you are still exposed to small amounts of toxic compounds.
Therefore, ventilate your apartment regularly and invest in plants that, in addition to their decorative role, will become your allies in maintaining the health and well-being of your entire family.
