One City, Many Cultures
Industrial Łódź in the 19th century was jointly shaped by four nations – Poles, Germans, Jews, and Russians. Łódź-Polish Dictionary: angielka – Parisian roll, drygle – cold jellied pork hocks (deli item), ekspres – zipper, galancie – a lot, nicely, well, gołda – vodka, kanar – public transport ticket inspector, migawka – public transport season ticket, siksa (from Yiddish) – young girl, fledgling, tytka – paper bag, a piece of paper spirally rolled; candy wrapper; borrowed from German (die Tüte = bag), zalewajka – potato soup with white borscht / sour rye soup cooked with potatoes, z miasta Łodzi – a syntactic construction observed by older Łódź residents, instead of the phrase z Łodzi – which evokes an association with a thief, żulik – Turkish bread with raisins.
