Designing a Bathroom – What to Keep in Mind and What to Avoid?

4 August 2025

The dream home outside the city is already chosen, with a private garden, bought from an experienced and well-reviewed developer. The paperwork is done, the construction team is at work, and you regularly check social media to see how the build of your future nest is progressing. Time to start thinking about the interiors!
At Novisa, we know how important the bathroom is. It’s a daily convenience that really matters. A well-designed bathroom means comfort, functionality, and less frustration during the morning rush. A poorly designed one? It can truly make life difficult.

Most Common Bathroom Design Mistakes

1. Sink that’s too small with not enough space around itThe sink isn’t just for hands. You brush your teeth, sometimes rinse clothes, wash your face here. You need space to lean over without hitting your head on a cabinet or mirror. In narrow bathrooms, instead of a protruding mirrored cabinet, it’s better to hang just a mirror and place the cabinet on a side wall.

2. Freestanding bathtub with no space for toiletriesA beautiful, designer bathtub in the center of the bathroom? Looks great in photos. But if you don’t plan shelves or niches for toiletries – chaos will follow. Remember: do you really want to dry and stash away the shower gel and shampoo every time after a bath? Probably not.
3. No convenient spot for soap
A small detail that makes a big difference. Soap needs a stable spot. If you leave it on the edge of the sink or shower tray – it’ll eventually fall or flood the surface. Holders, soap dishes, and niches matter.

4. Towel hook too far or too high
After washing your hands, you want to grab a towel – not drip water all over the bathroom. Ideally, place the hook within reach and at a height that doesn’t require lifting your arms too high and soaking your sleeves.

5. Poor washing machine choice
A top-loading washing machine is often the go-to in small bathrooms, but then… it always has to be left open to air out. That means you can’t use it as a counter. A better option may be a front-loading, slim model – then you can use the space above for storage (especially valuable in smaller spaces).
6. Not enough storage space
One of the most common mistakes when designing a bathroom is underestimating storage needs. But the bathroom is a logistical hub of the home! We store:
– toilet paper (in stock),
– towels – large bath towels and hand towels,
– daily skincare (makeup removers, creams, toners),
– bath products (shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, scrubs – each in different bottles and colors),
– laundry detergent, pods, fabric softeners,
– cleaning agents (scrubbing cream, toilet gel, window cleaner, descaler),
– brushes, combs, hairdryers, straighteners, razors,
– cotton buds, pads, facial tissues,
– and sometimes spare cosmetics or medications.
Open shelves are tempting with their Pinterest-worthy aesthetic, but they easily descend into visual chaos. Baskets in open shelves look lovely – provided what’s inside is tidy. Unfortunately, they often become catch-alls for “everything,” leading to constant clutter.
So here’s the golden rule: go for closed cabinets.
They hide all those colorful packages and visual noise, making the bathroom look clean and stylish, even when life is happening inside them.

7. No place to hang clothes and pajamas
It may seem like a small thing, but everyone’s faced it – where to put your clothes or robe before a bath? It’s worth planning an extra hook or a small shelf.

8. No thoughtfully placed power outlets
Hairdryer, razor, electric toothbrush, straightener… All need power. Make sure you have enough outlets, placed wisely – and of course, with the proper IP protection for bathrooms.

The bathroom is one of the most intensely used rooms in the house – it’s worth planning it not only with heart but also with your head.
